AR and Book Reports

Every quarter students will be reading books of their own choosing.  When they finish a book, they will take a reading quiz to earn points for what they've read.  We call these points AR (Accelerated Reading) points.  On average a student should be reading a half a point per day no matter what his or her reading level is.

Students are expected to earn 2.5 AR points per week.  They can do this incrementally, or they could read a big book worth a lot of points. It does not matter as long as students are reading books within their reading level and meeting the goal set for them each week.  The amount of reading they do is reflected in the weekly report cards sent home as well as the final report card for the quarter.

Although we will have some free reading time in school, students are expected to read for at least twenty uninterrupted minutes each night.

In addition to reading every day, students will be assigned a book report each quarter.  Sometimes the report will be on a book we read together in class; other times it will be based on one of their independent reading books they read on their own.

Students will be given some time to work on these book reports in class, but they will be expected to complete most of the project at home.
